Behind the sled:
DogSledding Iceland is a family owned business with Siggi and Klara at the head of the company.
Siggi has a history of 16years in the Icelandic police force before taking on the challenge of running dogs and through his vast knowledge of the land always knows the best places to run his dogs and make safe trails with beautiful views to enjoy the best the Icelandic nature has to offer.
Meeting Klara through their work as musher she has become his girlfriend as well as an invaluable part of the company taking care of many things for the company besides her main passion in life: dogsledding.
The latest addition to this small family owned business is their daughter Marylou, she is already showing great interest in the “woof-woof’s” and loves to be outside playing in the snow. Together they participate in dog sledding competitions organise in Iceland.
In good paws:
Most of the pack consists of Greenlandic dogs, which are an ancient breed traditionally used by the Inuit people of Greenland. This hardy sled dogs are known for their ability to endure extreme weather conditions – a real must in Iceland.
Over the past few years, DogSledding Iceland has also rescued a few Siberian Huskies. With their slight build, these arctic dogs work well with the Greenlandic dogs, enabling the teams to run at a faster pace than usual freight dogs.
Alaskan huskies are the latest addition to the kennel, bringing their high efficiency to the pack. Such a diverse combination of breeds gives guest a well-rounded introduction to the world of sled dogs.
It is very rare to be able to approach Greenlandic dogs, but with DogSledding Iceland you will soon be rolling about in the snow with them. Nothing is more important to them than their dogs’ well-being”, they live with their dogs wherever they set up camp.
DogSledding Iceland only operate a few tours per day, so that they never go close to their dogs limit, changing the route everyday to keep them interested and motivated. All of the dogs are born at the kennel and spend many months living with the owners to socialize them. They are all very friendly, well-trained and well-behaved dogs.”
Wherever the kennel is based throughout the year, it is easily accessible from Reykjavík and you can either make your own way on a 4×4 or get transferred to and from your hotel by one of the guides. The trips take place in open landscape offering 360 degrees of breathtaking views – weather permitting, of course! in Iceland you have so many beautiful sights all around the kennel to enjoy, you can go on a Golden Circle tour after dogsledding and witness gushing waterfalls, erupting geysers and continental plates splitting apart.
Groups are kept small to ensure a personal experience, so make sure to book well in advance, and remember, whatever tour you choose, belly rubs are mandatory!
